What to Look for in a Hair Restoration Surgeon

Hair restoration surgery is an investment in yourself – in your self-esteem, your confidence, and your appearance. You owe it to yourself to learn as much as you can before making a final decision about which physician you want to work with. Here are some of the criteria we believe you should consider when making your selection of a surgeon:

  • Experience – Experience is paramount when choosing a good hair restoration surgeon. Your goal should be to find a surgeon who has completed many procedures. Not all hair transplant professionals specialize in the same techniques, so someone who has extensive experience with the specific method you are seeking is ideal.
  • Surgeon Lead - This point may come as a surprise to some, but we highly recommend you look for a surgeon who actually does the surgery! Unfortunately, at the majority of clinics, non-medical technicians or medical assistants are often the primary providers. We stress the importance of a doctor who doesn't just 'show their face' once or twice. We're talking about being a 'hands-on' experienced MD with a surgical background running the show.
  • Credentials and Training – The more qualified the surgeon is, the better. A highly regarded hair transplant surgeon will be proud to share their training and qualifications.
  • Reviews – Look for genuine reviews and case studies from past patients your surgeon has worked with. It will let you know that your surgeon is skilled and will give you a lot more confidence that you’ll be happy with the results.
  • Before-and-After Pictures – Like reviews, it is important to ask your hair transplant doctor if they can provide before-and-after photos. They should be proud of the work they’ve done and happy to share the results with you.
  • Your Comfort Level With the Physician – Having a compatible patient/physician relationship is an invaluable part of your satisfaction with your surgical outcome. Schedule a consultation with the physician you are considering working with. Be prepared with a list of questions to ask about the procedure or recommended solutions. Are you satisfied that the physician spent enough time with you, listened to all your questions, and answered them to your satisfaction?

Was awesome! Everything was great, the staff, the office and it all went like he said it would. Best of all is the finished product. It looks so natural and I look 10 years younger! So glad I went.

Hair Transplant Patient

We know everyone is at different stages in their hair loss journey. There are no wrong questions to ask your surgeon. A great physician will take the time to help you assess your current status and advise you on what your best options are. There is nothing cookie-cutter about it - each and every patient is assessed individually and your plan is customized just for you.

Every consultation is handled personally by one of our three experienced and expert surgeons. There are no commissioned hair transplant consultants at the Toronto Hair Transplant Surgeons. Our patients can have confidence that each step you take with us is personalized and specialized for you. Our doctors will discuss both surgical and other therapeutic options that take your age, genetic history, medical history, and aesthetic goals into consideration. Your solution should be as unique as you are.

Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) – sometimes referred to as Follicular Unit Extraction - hair transplants are one of the two main hair transplant procedures used today. With an FUE procedure, hair follicles are individually excised from donor areas including the back and sides of the patient’s head and are then transplanted to the recipient area (desired area - front hairline, crown, eyebrows, face, etc.). FUE is a more labour-intensive procedure due to the excision method. Large sessions of up to 3000 grafts are regularly performed for appropriate patients by our skilled team of surgeons here at the Toronto Hair Transplant Surgeons. Many patients see amazing results with far fewer grafts.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) differs from FUE in that the donor hair is surgically excised as a strip, as opposed to harvesting individual hair follicles one at a time. This is why FUT is often referred to as a “strip procedure.” Although both procedures are equally effective, FUT must be performed by a skilled surgeon (not a technician) to avoid an unsightly scar on the back of the head. For this reason, it might not be the best option for those who want to cut/wear their hair very short. The size of the scar can vary greatly depending on the skill of the surgeon and the Toronto Hair Transplant Surgeons is proud to be a specialist in helping with scar repairs for patients who had unsatisfactory work done outside of our clinic.

Before and After Photos

Answering your questions and concerns in depth is a primary goal of the consultation. No question is too trivial to be addressed honestly and thoroughly.
The Toronto Hair Transplant Surgeons doctors will review your current situation, including all products used on the scalp. They will also evaluate your medical history and any medications you might be taking at this time.

In your consultation, you'll discover what solutions are viable options for you based on your family history and current scenario. If surgery is an option for you, the doctor will review with you what their recommendation is for which technique would give you the results you are looking for. It is at this time that the doctor will also be able to quote you on the price and details of your procedure, and just how fast you can have the hair you always wanted. The consultation is thorough and personal, and most patients walk away with all the information they need to make a decision for their best next step forward towards their new future with fuller hair!

To maximize your experience with Toronto Hair Transplant Surgeons, we are going to cover some of the most frequently asked questions about our consultations.

Are the consultations FREE?

Can I meet with the doctor in person?

Sorry, but we're just not there yet given the ongoing pandemic. We have resumed surgeries as our only in-patient procedures and have moved all consults and follow-up visits to our state-of-the-art virtual platform (unless medically necessary). We've got a great virtual consultation system where patients can upload photos and we chat via live video stream in resolution up to 4K without any software to download. Not to worry, we’ve actually been doing this for a long time (even before COVID), for our patients that come to us from all over the world, from Hawaii to Finland and all places in between. We are confident we have a great system set up to serve our patients.

How do I book a surgery?

We're thrilled you're interested in having one of our doctors perform your surgery. But your first step is a consult. Then, if you are a candidate the doctor will be able to advise you on how to proceed with your booking.

Do I have to book surgery with the doctor I have my consult with?

Believe us, this question comes up frequently. A lot of patients have a timeframe in mind when they consider surgery so our team is prepared either way. If your surgeon isn't available on the date you prefer, feel free to book with the surgeon who is. You're in expert hands no matter which surgeon you choose!

Patients come from all over the world to have their surgery done by the trusted experts at the Toronto Hair Transplant Surgeons.  Each of the pins on the map represents an actual patient that’s been treated by one of our doctors. No other clinic in the Toronto Area can boast such an international clientele and we’re proud of our worldwide reputation.
